Victorian Healthy Supermarkets Project
Healthy Choices ‘nudges’ are occurring in a range of settings across Victoria including supermarkets. A recent example of a successful initiative occurred during a project aimed to create healthy supermarkets for Victorians. In addition to their successful outcomes, this project was chosen as the 2016 VicHealth Awards recipient for Promoting Healthy Eating.
Obesity, often attributed to unhealthy diets, is a leading burden of disease on a global, national and local scale. Alarmingly, Australia is considered one of the leading countries when it comes to unhealthy food promotion within a supermarket setting (Cameron, 2014).
According to research conducted by Deakin University, Marketing techniques have been determined to influence consumer choice and with 63% of food spending occurring in supermarkets, health promotion marketing techniques geared towards healthy choices in this environment could in fact benefit communities by increasing healthy food purchases by consumers. (Cameron, 2015)
