Case Study: Building an evidence base to increase participation in Lawn Bowls

In 2012, Bowls Australia (BA) engaged with La Trobe University’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact to complete research into lawn bowls participation, with the goal to build a base of evidence to support decision making to increase participation.

The result of research was that BA was provided with new insights into the most important motives for people to play bowls, reasons people participate and the perceived health benefits. In addition, a profile of bowls as a sport was developed, which included characteristics of the experience of bowls. These insights, such as shortened game times and more flexible competition scheduling, provided BA with a base of evidence to inform their programs and events aimed at attracting new participants to the sport.
