Vicsport would like to invite all members to attend the 2016 SportsTalk Forum, AGM and Christmas Drinks to be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 22 November.

This year we are focusing on grassroots sport and as such hosting the event at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club. For the majority of us, grassroots is where it all began. It is where we fell in love with sport, formed friendships, developed careers, and is also where most of Australia’s elite sportspeople have begun their journeys. This is why it is important to recognise its value and what it contributes to our society.

This year's SportsTalk Forum is titled: Podium & Participation: Governance, Recognition & the Return on Investment.

The Forum will explore the following topics:

  • The balance between high performance and community sport
  • What is the return on investment?
  • How governance at the national level influences the community level
  • How community sport links with elite sport
  • Trickle down effects of the Olympics
  • The importance of club sport – offering more than just physical activity
  • Does community sport receive enough recognition?

The guest speaker will be Gideon Haigh. Haigh is a respected, independent journalist and author who has written for The Age and the Australian and contributed to over 100 newspapers and magazines on both business and sport topics. Haigh is also a regular panellist on the ABC’s Offsiders Program. At the community level Haigh is a life member, committeeman and the games record holder at South Yarra Cricket Club, where he has played since 1993. With his passion and involvement in community sport, and his years covering elite sport, Haigh is well placed to explore the many aspects of this topic in great detail.

Following the Forum, Vicsport will be hosting the 2015/2016 Annual General Meeting during which the new strategic plan for 2017-2020 will be released.

All members are then invited to enjoy Christmas drinks and celebrate another amazing year in Victorian sport.
