Vicsport is hosting a child safe sport forum for State Sport Associations, Regional Sport Assemblies, Local Governments, Clubs and Associations.

Supported by the Victorian State Government and legal firm Landers & Rogers, this event will see a range of child safety experts share evidence based information and strategies to support child safety environments in sporting settings.

Vicsport has lined up four excellent speakers for this event:

Liana Buchanan - Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People in Victoria

Liana Buchanan is the Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People and a part-time Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission. Liana commenced as Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People in April 2016. As Principal Commissioner, she is responsible for regulating organisations that work with children, oversighting services for vulnerable children and young people, and promoting rights, interests and wellbeing of children and young people in Victoria. Liana has held a range of roles focused on oversight and system reform for people experiencing disadvantage and those affected by family and sexual violence. These roles include Director, Office of Correctional Services Review, Executive Officer of the Federation of Community Legal Centres and roles in the Equal Opportunity Commission, Department of Justice and Women’s Legal Service (S.A).

Daryl Higgins – Director, Institute of Child Protection Studies

Professor Daryl Higgins commenced as the Director of the Institute of Child Protection Studies in February 2017. His research focuses on public health approaches to protecting children, and child-safe organisational strategies. A registered psychologist, Prof Higgins has been researching child abuse impacts and prevention, family violence and family functioning for over 20 years.

Phoebe Pownall - Child Safe Coordinator, Gymnastics Victoria & Gymnastics Australia

Phoebe Pownall is the Gymnastics Victoria Child Safe Coordinator and has worked with children for over 10 years in Australia as well as in Cambodia, Africa and New Zealand. She has a degree in Psychological Science and has worked as a children’s behavioural therapist and more recently as a front line social worker for the Department of Human Services and in foster care for Berry Street.

Linette Harriott - Sector Support and Youth Leadership Coordinator, Centre for Multicultural Youth

Linette is currently working for the Centre for Multicultural Youth as the Sector Support and Youth Leadership coordinator, delivering a range of training and forums for all sectors. Her previous roles have included Child Wise (child safety), family violence and youth residential care work. Linette has extensive experience in designing and leading training and facilitation projects and consulting across the community, not for profit and government sectors.

Following the presentations there will be a panel discussion and opportunities for you to ask questions of these experts.
