Are You On Board? New Resources Available
On Friday 16 February 2018, Vicsport in partnership with the State Government launched a suite of online resources aimed at educating sporting organisations on how to be more welcoming to people with disabilities.
The campaign titled “Are You On Board?” raises the rhetorical question whether sporting organisations have practices in place to support people with disabilities.
The launch attracted some forty people from Disability Sport and Recreation, members from VicHealth and the Minister for Disability, Martin Foley.
Held in the foyer at MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre) in an ‘open theatre’ style, people watched the videos and began the conversation of how organisations can ‘jump on board’ to accommodate people with disabilities in their sporting codes.
The kids featured in the film from The Port Phillip Specialist School were smiling from check to check to see their chirpy faces on the big screen.
Minister for Disability Martin Foley shared his thoughts on how important it is for sports to be inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities.
Vicsport Interm CEO Michael Sholly referenced the statistic that approximately 700,000 people in Victoria have a disability and aren’t playing sport, urging us a sporting community to be proactive and reach out to these communities to become more inclusive.
CEO of Disability Sport and Recreation Richard Amon commended the work of Vicsport and the State Government for making inclusiveness a priority.
Vicsport Participation Strategy Manager Tom Dixon wrapped up the event thanking the support from Disability Sport and Recreation for participating in the videos.
