Learning From Outside Sport – STREAT

There are many great examples of successful scalable business models from the broader not-for-profit field. STREAT is an excellent example of a locally based social enterprise that has successfully expanded off the back of a scalable model.

STREAT aims to address youth homelessness and disadvantage by creating a supported pathway for 16-25 year olds to move into a sustainable livelihood. This is being achieved by providing a range of support services, including certificate courses in hospitality. STREAT then provides opportunities for youth to work in businesses it runs: five cafes, one catering company and one coffee roaster, with all profits going back into supporting youth training.

STREAT is an example of the need to not only aim for a scalable model from the start, but that financial sustainability is achieved over time, requiring constant planning and evaluation to ensure overall goals can feasibly be achieved.

You can read through a summary of STREAT’s business model and strategies here. You can also view a series of videos in which the CEO Bec Scott speaks to The Difference Incubator about scalability here.
