Learning from sport – the SurfGroms licensing model
Surfing Australia’s modified junior program – Weetbix SurfGroms – started in 2011 with the help of funding from the Australian Sports Commission. Weet-Bix SurfGroms is available through a network of licensed Surfing Australia Surf Schools to anyone aged between 5 and 12 years old regardless of experience or ability. It offers youngsters an opportunity to develop strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives, while also developing a proficiency in surfing that they will enjoy and embrace for a lifetime. The program was launched in September 2011, targeting 40 delivery centres. This was quickly exceeded in years 1 and 2, with 80 delivery centres active by the end of 2013 and over 19,000 participants. By the end of 2015, the program had over 40,000 participants and a new sponsor – Weetbix
The program has achieved growth and sustainability through:
- A license delivery model which provides 80 delivery centres nationally to deliver the program, allowing for key elements to be controlled, such as coaching qualifications and program content.
- The support of financial partners, including Weetbix, Quiksilver and many more.
- Even registration numbers across both boys and girls.
