Monash Health and City of Casey Sports Clubs

The healthy canteen project was Developed by the South East Region Healthy Choices Working Group.

In a unique partnership, Monash Health and City of Casey identified sports clubs as a unique setting that engages a variety of people, including spectators, players, members and the wider community.

The Healthy Canteens pilot was developed to increase the number of healthy options in canteens.

A framework was created to support clubs to work towards the Healthy Choices Guidelines (Healthy choices: food and drink classification guide, 2015) consistent with recent state-wide healthy eating initiatives. Support for healthy changes was provided by Health Promotion Practitioners, Sport and Recreation Officers and an Accredited Practising Dietitian by building the capacity of sports clubs to identify and implement sustainable changes.

Three sports clubs in Casey participated over a 4 week period.

Results for from the Healthy Canteens pilot indicate:

- Anecdotally there was no loss of profit for any clubs involved

- 23 healthy changes were made to canteen menus

- One club increased their healthy options by 20%

Overwhelmingly the results from the pilot were positive and moving forward, the project will be offered to a larger number of clubs and all existing clubs have expressed interest in continuing to improve their menus.
