Violence Against Women: An overview of research and approaches to primary prevention


Sport provides a valuable setting to change social norms, culture and behaviour to advance gender equality and prevent violence against women. VicHealth’s focus on women in sport forms part of our overarching commitment to achieving gender equality across the community and build a culture of respect and non-violence.

VicHealth have recently published an update of the latest published research examining violence against women in Australia and its prevention. Violence Against Women in Australia: An overview of research and approaches to primary prevention includes responses to violence against women and primary prevention actions. This overview focuses on:

  • the extent of violence against women
  • population groups at risk
  • the health, social, economic and other consequences of the problem
  • community attitudes to violence against women
  • responses to violence against women: policy, community and media
  • actions to address the drivers of violence against women

This is a useful tool for people across sectors like sports, health, workplace who are seeking to increase their knowledge about violence against women and to integrate prevention into their everyday business.
