Good Sports – ice, alcohol and other drug forums

Close to 1,500 Victorians have benefited from Good Sports ‘Tackle the issue’ forums.

Designed to help sports clubs build their capacity to lead the community response to ice, alcohol and other drugs, 19 forums were held in regional areas across the state between October and April.

Participants learned about crystal methamphetamine – otherwise known as ice – and its effects, who is at most risk, how clubs can deter drug use, how to respond to drug use incidents, and how they can help people who need assistance.

The events also covered the value of sporting organisations developing a drug policy which all members contribute to.

Mark Nash, Good Sports Victoria State Manager, is delighted with how the forums were received.

“We wanted to empower sports clubs to feel confident responding to issues caused by ice, alcohol and other drugs. Judging by the fantastic feedback we received, the forums have done just that,” he said.

Greenhills Montmorency Baseball Club Secretary, Tabatha Delaney, attended the South Morang event.

She said: “The forum completely exceeded expectations. We got so much out of it and now feel much better equipped to recognise and deal with drug issues should they arise.”

Good Sports – which is run by the Australian Drug Foundation – is now building on the success of the forums by encouraging clubs to get involved with the program so they can benefit from the ongoing support it provides.Australian Drug Foundation
